Item Kargı ilçesi coğrafyası(Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsü, 2004) Yakar, Mustafa; Elibüyük, Mesut; CoğrafyaSUMMARY Kargı county, our research area, take places in West Black Sea subregion of Black Sea Region. The county, which is interior zone of this subregion belongs to Lower Kızılırmak District. Kargı, one of the counties of Çorum province has 1.394 km* area. Big part of the county which forms northern province is mountainous. Range of mountains extending in the west-east direction and very dissected valley in the same direction forms morphological units. East sector of the Ilgaz Mountains in the north, Kös mountain and Ada mountain are major highlands. Landforms of our research area which has sudden altitude change within short distance determine human-nature interaction of any lavel. In the county where transitive climate between coast region and interior region prevails, annual temprature is 13.6 "C. Even in the January, the coldest month, temratures doesn't fall below 0 UC (1.6 UC). In the county having annual average rainfall of 358 mm, climate elements change with respect to landforms and altitude. Plant cover of the region consists of forestry. Half of the total area is covered with forest. In the county, landforms, altitude and position conditions determines distribution of forest area. Accordingly, forest area composed of hyrophytes and xerophytes. In the county having 57 villages, there are 2 towns, 100 neighbourhoods. In addition, many plateu settlements take place over the Ilgaz Mountains. According to 2000 census 20.388 people live. Approximatly 80 % of the people live in villages. In the research area, densest population is in the walley plain. Average density of population is 16 people per km^. Population decreases rapidly due to migration out of the county. As a result of migration starting after 1965 mainly due to economic concerns, today many villages and neihbourhoods in mountainous area are virtually avoid of people. Main economic activities in Kargı county are agricalture, livestock and forestry. Differences in natural environment determine distribution and importance level of these activities. As a matter of fact, while agricalture is prevalent in hotter and waterable walley plain. Livestock is so in highlands. Major animal kinds are sheeps and cattle. As a result of large forest cover of the county, economic activities 276based on forest provide additional income for these people. The county is poor in underground resources. In recent years marble quarries have started to run. Workshop type indusrty is traditional economic activity, modern industry consists of several factories. 277
