Abstract

Aim; The aim of this study is to determine the possible relationship between Alzheimer's disease patients' symptomatology and the burn-out profile of their primary caregivers and to figure out the probable contribution of the carers burn-out to their ways of coping with stress. Method; Subjects included in the study are 44 Alzheimer's disease patients and their primary caregivers. The patients' cognitive state were evaluated by using the Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale (BPRS) was used for the assessment of behavioral and psychological symptoms. Outcome measurement was delivered by Personal Self- Maintaining Scale (PSMS). Patients were given Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) and carers were administrated Maslach Burn-out Inventory (MBI) and Ways of Coping Scale (WCS). Collected data were analysed via Student's t-Test, One-Way ANOVA, Pearson 's Correlation Analysis and Logistic Regression Analysis. Findings; The burn-out profile of the caregivers highly correlates with their patients' cognitive state, BPRS scores and PSMS points. Not any significant relationship was observed between patients' depression grade and carers burn-out measures. In terms of ways of coping with stress, carers who are emotionally exhausted tended to use helpless style more often, while non exhausted caregivers used self confidental style. Discussion; Appropriate approaches should be held for identfying and intervening the symptomatic features those may exacerbate the burn-out process.
