Abstract
Karain Cave constitutes the main subject of our thesis 124 core and 983 blade / bladelet products which belongs to the Upper Paleolithic and Epi-paleolithic era and found during the excavations performed in 1999-2000 and 2004. The technology of these pieces have been examined in accordance with some certain criteria. While most of the products are composed of bladelets, then comes in turn blade, crested bladelet and plunging. Almost all of the raw materials are radiolarite. They are mostly grey and brown. Flat, broken and line butt is the most common types of blades and bladelets. Flaking angle is less then 90 degrees for almost all of the pieces. Fracture has been determined 479 of the 983 pieces. Distal fractures are more in number. The number of crude face, cortex and the pieces that has fire mark are less. The pieces that show unipolar inference are more. Non-geometric microlits constitutes nearly all of the microlits found. End scrapers, backed bladelets, dufour bladelets, narrow micro points and a few atypical crescents and atypical trapezes in Epi-paleolithic levels are distinguished among the retouched pieces. Prismatic cores constitutes most of the cores. While bipolar inference are frequent, there are many cores showing cross and unipolar inference. There is an increase in the pieces with fracture, with cortex and crude face. The number of cores which have fire mark and natural fracture face are less. We intend to put forward the technological features of the Upper Paleolithic and Epi-paleolithic era?s knapped stone industry of the Karain Cave which is one of the most important settlements of Turkey in this analysis study.
