Abstract

Al-Ash'arî who lived between the years 260-324/874-936 accepted as the founder of Ash'arîte School (Ash'arism). He is the author of many works, however the ones that are used in the scientific studies are; Risâle Kataba biha ilâ Ahl al-Thagr, Istihsân al- khaud, Maqâlât, Luma', and Ibâna. These books were written after his separation from Mu'tazilite. His work Ibâna, as we have it, can not be assessed as completely his work. The additions from other persons is probable, but is impossible to determine the amount of additions and changes. For that reason it is inadequate to analyze his opinions basing just in this work. Ibâna is an important problem for the researchers to determine his intellectual stages. As far as we determine, he has two main stages in his ideas. First stage is called Mu'tazilite which he gave up later. The second stage is the one in which he followed İbn Kullâb and took a way in between Mu'tazilite and traditionalist (Ashâb al-Hadîth) which later known as Ash'arism. Although there were many reasons resulting his separation from Mu'tazilite, the main reason was his effort to find solutions to his own questions. There is no proof indicating that Al-Ash'arî is not sincere in his changes of intellectual stages. It is hard to claim that Al-Ash'arî and his followers are different with respect to thoughts, because there is no serious difference in main principles between Al-Ash'arî and his leadings followers Bâqillânî, Imam al-Haramayn Al-Juwaynî, Ghazzalî. It can easily be inferred that Ash'arî's follower are accepting and strictly following Al-Ash'arî in terms of the main principles of the school.
