Abstract
The main aim of this thesis, The Transformation of Arab Nationalism in Hafez Assad?s Syria (1971-2000), is to thoroughly inspect the recent history of Syria which interests Turkey in many points while Syria is qualified as one of the major actors of the political history of the Middle East. There is a very long political history between Turkey and Syria lasted for centuries while the recent periods can be described as caotic. In this context the target of this thesis is to examine the thirty year continuous ruling period of Hafez Assad who was the main political figure of recent history in Syria. This thesis tries to put forward the change in Arab nationalism during the rule of Hafez Assad.In this thesis, how and for whatever reasons, which role and/or roles have been tailored for Arab nationalism within the respective period has been discussed. And answers were sought for the questions of how and in what way Arab nationalism has been transformed in terms of pragmatic policies of Hafez Assad. The thesis will also examine whether it had been effective in the formation of ?Syrian? identity taking the assumption that it had been wrapped in different forms. And the thesis will analyze what was the position of Arab nationalism in the system of personal domination assumed to be formed during Hafez Assad?s rule.As this thesis is an inter-disciplinary work based both on the respective period and on political history, because of the nature of the subject, various methods were applied. The main basis of this work, primarily during Hafez Assad?s rule, is the historical events happened in Syria and the Middle East between 1971-2000. In this context, main sources of this thesis were the political history of Hafez Assad era, the Syrian Constitution and the Ba?ath Party Program. Apart from these sources, publications in Turkish and in other languages and field studies in Syria and Lebanon were used in this study.Key Words: Syria, Hafez Assad, Arab/Syrian Nationalism, Nation and Identity Formation, System of Personal Sovereignty
