Abstract

In this study, the graphic design principles were drawn up for the textbooks in order to determine the effects of the booklet produced under such principles on the achievement and attitude toward the course of students. The subjects comprised of 288 elementary school students of the 3rd year. 151 students used the booklet that was produced under the graphic design principles for the textbooks, while 137 ones used traditional textbooks. At the beginning and end of this study using 2x4 design, the achievement test and the scaling on attitude towards the course were applied to the students as the pretest and posttest respectively. The Formative Tests 1 and 2 were performed, three weeks and ten weeks later than the experiment. Interviews took place with a group of subjects as well as their teachers and parents on the books used for the study. The method of one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed to analyze the quantitative data. However, the qualitative data were organized by means of content analysis and categorical coding. The findings obtained from the study demonstrate that the booklet produced under the graphic design principles for textbooks have a positive effect on the course achievement of students. The students, who had usually positive attitude towards the course of Social Sciences, demonstrated no significant change in attitude after the test. According to the opinions of students, teachers and parents, the booklet produced under the graphic design principles has positive effects on the students.
