Abstract

İn this study the famous Ottoman sage Katip Çelebi?s understanding of science has been investigated. Katip Çelebi introduced İbn Haldun?s some views of history, and society and state to the Otoman world. These views were defended in detail by his disciples such as Naima and Şehrîzâde. İn Turkey?s Republic period a common claim has been put forward that Katip Çelebi was the starter of modern science in Turkısh culture. Besides ıt?s seen that western orientalists have made use of his works to learn and understand the eastern and İslamic civilizations. These works are especially Keşfü?z-Zünûn, Takvîmu?t-Tevârîh, Cihannüma.The image of Katip Çelebi imposed in Turkish Republic Period is far from reality. Katip Çelebi had been dedicated to İslamic tradition in terms of scientific and philisophical theories. İn his studies we see no tracks of modern science and philosophy. For instance he defended the İslamic adaptations of Ptolemy?s astronomy, Hippocrates and Galenos?s medicine and Aristotelean physics. İn philosophy it seen that he was connected to ?İşrâkiyyûn? approach. His thinking binds opposite motives such as religious, rational, mistical and magical ones. These motives intervene openly in his methods of knowledge, understanding of natural sciences, philosophical views and image of universe and the world. To conclude a representation of Katip Çelebi who objected to intellectuel inclinations in İslamic civilization and who adopted the modern understanding of science and philosophy of the west does not seem to be real.
