Abstract

The Ilkhanid Empire, which was emerged as the Chingiz Khan conquests transformed into a political form in the Persian land, is influenced from the states that they interacted in Near East and Middle East, both culturally and also institutionally. The footprints of these contacts and interactions between the Ilkhanid and neighboring states can also be traced in its military organization. Initially, Mongols, who came from Asian steppes to the Persia and Middle East, altered their production and consumption practices as a result of following Turkish and Muslim societies as an example. At first, the Mongolian-Ilkhanid army was based on light cavalry, had in time transformed into midheavy and later into heavy cavalry. The stability and order of the agrarian societies in the Near East attracted the Nomadic Mongols and settle them down and in this way the structure of the state became more influential and distinctive. The Mamluk State, which was a rival of the Mongolians in this land, was one of the primary factors that accelerated the transformation of the Mongolian army. When Persian Mongols had acquired the required experiences and knowledge for the change, they embarked on reforms under the leadership of Ghazan Khan. With the increase of welfare, acquiring of required technicians and equipment, which opened the foundation of weaponry, is an indicator of advancement in weapon production. This also shows that the transformation in weaponry from primitive style in which each soldier makes their own weapons, to the more centralized and standardized mode of production. In the early times, the Persian Mongols food supplies were provided by Nomadic livestock and for this reason feeding grounds were allocated for each squad. Our thesis, in which we studied Anatolian and Khorasan?s pasture fields as well as the Azerbaijan?s mountain pastures and shelter places, shows the place of these pasture fields in the military system in detail. In sum, besides introducing the the Ilkhanid military organization, our thesis covers the exchange and advancement of military organization of the Ilkhanids.
