Abstract
This research aims at demonstrating the function of tales in popular education and their contribution to language education and develop ment, without distinguishing between children and adults. 90 stories have been used in this research. These stories have been collected from all regions of Turkey and put into writing for the first time, which makes them authentic. A total of 5 1 7 messages have been found in these 90 tales which have been examined and these messages are divided into 5 main groups based on their content and were further divided as 19 main titles and 162 sub-titles. After fee "Preface" and "Introduction", there are four main chapters which are also divided into parts among themselves. In the first chapter a general description of the tale is made and then the tales which took place in mis research are classified and evaluated in general terms and the messages given in the tales are also generally appraised and fee influence of tales on different types of literature and art is tried to be presented. In Chapter II, fee educational function of stories and their message indexes are shown and fee main and subtitles in fee message index are listed. Following that, common messages mentioned most frequently are identified and evaluated and functional characters of fee human heroes in fee stories and their role in communicating fee messages are studied. In Chapter HI, language and depiction techniques and fee text of each tale are thoroughly reviewed with specific examples and the significance of tales in teaching and developing language skills have been shown wife examples taken from various authors and their works. In Chapter IV, fee story texts, classified under 4 main titles and 7 sub-titles, and after each text fee messages and their index numbers, as taken from message-index list in Chapter n, are indicated. In addition, one sentence abstract of fee event feat takes place in each message was placed at fee end. The last chapter is proceeded by "Conclusions", in which a general evaluation of fee research is made and the "Bibliography".
