Abstract
The matter of the variant readings of the Qur'ān (qirā'āt) is one of the most complicated issues in the Quranic commentary science. Because of the qirā'āt is the science of reading formats relating with pronunciation of the Qur'ān, it is on a large scale a philological case. The Qur'ān and qirā'āt have been in an important position during the process of determining the language rules. Qur'ān and qirā'āt have been both source and object in terms of Arabic linguistic studies. Therefore the interest of linguists on qirā'āt have never come to an and. Especially in the early Islamic periods in which Islamic sciences were codified, the linguists researched linguistic basis of the readings and criticized or prefered some of them within the framework of the linguistic rules. The approach of linguists, especially linguist commentators, to the qirā'āt has been criticized by some Islamic sciences scholars. This thesis aims to examine aproaches of linguists to the qirā'āt in the linguistic commentaries. The study consists of introduction, three chapters and conclusion. The introductory chapter presents information on the qirā'āt and the linguistic commentary generally. The first chapter analyzes the general aproach to the variant readings of the qur'ān in the linguistic commentaries. The second chapter deals with how the readings are assessed in these commentaries. In the third chapter reveals the methods of evaluation of qirā'āt in these works. The study ands with conclusion.
