Abstract

"Sarımsaklı Plain and its surroundings" which constitute our research area is situated in the Middle Kızılırmak Region of Central Anatolia Region» in Kayseri city area. Sarımsaklı Plain, which is in the middle of research area, lengthens in the direction of NE-SW and is a tectonic based plain and its avarage height from sea level is 1050 m. High mountains and plateaus surround Sarımsaklı Plain. The plain is in a depression state in the middle of these high areas. Erciyes (3917 m. ), which is one of Turkey's high volcanic moun tains is situated to the south of the plain. Apart from these important heighs, Sarımsaklı Plain is surronded by structural plateaus. There is a proportional difference of height of 400 m. between the plain base and the highest level of the plateaus. Sarımsaklı Plain has been inhabited since the middle 3 BC since it has fertile alluvial land and aboundant water sources. Furthermore, its being on the junction of military and commercial roads has increased its importance a greal deal. Today, there is a city, 5 towns and 55 villages in the researches area. These places had a population of 551.624 in 1990. 48.964 of this population is in the villages, 41.665 of it is in the towns and 460.995 of it is in Kayseri. Agriculture, industry and commerce are dominant activities in the research area. Kayseri being in the middle of Sarımsaklı Plain affects the surrounding villages and towns socially and economically. Economical effect region of Kayseri city is not limited only by its clase surroundings. The city, with improved industrial and commercial functions, also affects the regions outside Central Anatolia Region. i/6
