Abstract

In this work, ammonia, ammonia derivatives (methyl, ethyl, propyl and butyl series) and the salts of these derivates have been investigated in non-aqueous media and observed some interesting results. The results observed may be collected in two main groups, a) The relative basicity order of the ammonia and ammonia deri vatives, b) Quantitative determination of the ammonium salts. Ammonia and ammonia derivatives have been titra ted potentiometrically with picric and 3,5-dinitroben- zoic acids in order to determine the basicity order of these compounds in nitrobenzene solvent. After that, half neutralization potentials have been calculated from their titration curves and the relative basicity order has been found to be as following: R2NH > R3 > RHH2 > NH3 (R: stands for, methyl, ethyl, propyl, butyl) In addition, hydrochloride salts of these bases have been titrated potentiometrically with tetrabutylammonium hydroxide in pyridine solvent and obtained a basicity order as follows: RNH2 > R2NH > R3N Furthermorej an identical basicity order has been observed upon titration of the amines with perchlo ric acid in pyridine solvent. But the place of the ammo nia in the former titrations has shown a great change. While it was before the tertiary amines in the hydroch loride series, it has come to the level of the primary amines in the free amine series. In quantitative determination of ammonia salts, ammonium chloride and nitrate have been titrated poten tiometrically with the tetrabutylammonium hydroxide in gyridine solvent, and ammonium sulfate, however, has een titrated conductimetrically with barium acetate i.i flacial acetic acid. This titrations have shown that hese ammonia salts can be titrated in non-aqueous media quantitatively. Key words: Non-aqueous media, ammonia, amines, ammonium salts, potentiometric titrations, conducti- metric titrations.
