Abstract
In this study, the modern storytellers' experiences and motivating reasons leading them to tell folk tales for therapeutic purposes are discussed. In addition, the empowering aspects of the storytelling practice for women are discussed through the interactions with the storytellers. This case study differs from the previous studies, which discuss the symbols of classic folk tales with a feminist perspective, with its focus on storytelling as a performative art. This study builds itself on Holistic Medicine, which defines a complementary treatment taking a person's body, mind, spirit and emotions into account as health aspects. The main research problems of the study are as follows: How do fairy tales heal people? How does culture affect storytelling as a practice in terms of gender norms? Have the storytellers designed any storytelling workshops with a focus on gender studies? What are the expectations and demands of storytellers to work on fairy tales to contribute to gender equality? The research participants' statements in relation to storytelling, gender and therapy allow us to trace the changes of today's culture in comparison to the past. The findings of this case study show that people prefer storytelling as they evaluate it as an alternative healing method treating mind, body and spirit for overall well-being. The study shows that participants in storytelling workshops and training are mostly women. The perception of folk tales as sexist narratives has begun to change due to the storytellers' tendency to portray the gender roles with a twist, to comply with current cultural acceptance and understanding of gender norms. The discussions related to storytelling are based on values such as exploring and understanding oneself, and developing healthy relationships with people and the universe. These values are defined by most of the participants as "feminine". In the light of these discussions, storytelling as a performative act may contribute to feminist pedagogy and feminist movement in Turkey.
