Abstract
In Cyprus, the division of Orthodox-Catholic in the Christian world has, dramatically affected religious and political consequences. The history of the island was changed by the settlement of the crusaders during the Third Crusade Movement. The Catholic Sect entered Cyprus through the crusaders. In between 1192 and 1489 the abiding rule of the Lusignan in Cyprus, enforced a great pressure both politically and religiously on the Orthodox population and the Cyprian Orthodox Archbishop was abolished. The enforcement of this pressure was also embodied to the Cyprus population during the Venetian period. The strategic invasion to Cyprus in the East Mediterranean was highly important for the Ottoman Empire. The consequence of the Ottomans sovereignty over Cyprus in 1571 to this date, in Cyprus the existence of clashes between the Catholics and the Orthodox has won in favor to the Orthodox. This conquest brought out together the vivification of the Archbishop of Cyprus. The Ottoman Government not only vivified the Archbishop of Cyprus but also provided him with big rights and privileges that gave him power on the island, which paved out the way. In the year 1754, the Ottoman Government recognized the Archbishop of Cyprus as the leader of the Rayahs. With time the political authority followed by important economic authority like tax collection, made the Archbishop of Cyprus one the most authorized administrator on the island. The church authorities having obtained these powers started to misuse their positions for their own purposes, exhibiting bad authority both to their sector as well as the Ottoman authority. 150The negative attitude of the Archbishop of Cyprus and the bishops, with time made them loose the trust and esteem of their own people. In the year 1821 an explosion, which occurred in Mora because of the Greece Uprising, also affected Cyprus. At fist the Clergy Class of Cyprus, having collected substantial aid from the populace, both spiritually and materially supported the uprising in Mora. With these developments, in the year 1821 the leading Greek Cypriot religious priests were executed after it was discovered that clergy elite had a participation in initiation of the uprising. These existing executions paved out the way to esteem for the Archbishop of Cyprus by his own community.
